Need a little help with this one

I have a Legacy 2lt turbo 4x4 and I fitted a new pipercross filter on saturday and everything was going great till this morning when on my way to work (foot to the floor as I was late as usual) an unusual noise came from under the hood, after a bit of investigation I found that the filter had caved in on its self.

Nothing fell against the filter (that I could see) and it was still fixed to the adaptor on the MAF

Can anyone shed some light on this ???
Has it happened to anyone else ???

And as you can see there is no shortage of space or airflow for the filter

 

There is alu mesh inside, that is caved in aswell

 

i think the problem is that the filter you are using is a cross between a cone filter and a pre filter. A pre filter is a foam element that goes over the filter to get out even more of the crap that kills your engine. My suggestion is to go to your local parts shop and pay the money to get a k and n cone filter. I think that you just got taken for a ride when you bought that filter. Sorry

Sorry I ment to mention that i am in Ireland and because KnN have pulled out of Europe and gone back to the states KnN filters here are like hens teeth, few and far between, believe me I tried and if ya do want one you will have to get in line.

Pipercross was not my 1st choice as I have always used KnN filters on my previous cars but we all have to learn the hard way

 

I went back to the shop i got the filter from and they took back the pipercross filter with a little persuasion and have a KnN on order for me so i'm back to the standard box for the mo
