Air Filter prices

So a friend of mine said that he got his air filter from a dealer in NH. Cost him $12.50. When I asked for a filter from my dealer (Norwood Subaru in MA), it was $23.95. What?

I told him to check. He said that the 2002s cost $14.95 and he would be able to sell the filter to me for $14.95 instead of $23.95 for my 01 Legacy GT.

I don't get that. Why is there a huge difference in price ?

maybe he was wanting to make some extra $$$ until you called him on it. Just pay the $45 or $50 for a k&n and you will make you money back on it within a year or two... I doubt it added any performace to my car, but it didn't hurt it and I don't have to drive to the dealer to get a new filter. I just clean and oil it ever now and then... Thay are good basically forever...

Thanks for your reply. The thing about the K&N is that I've heard from other owners that it may or may not cause problems with the engine. Sometimes the engine light could come on. It really depends on your luck.

I've had the Place Racing CAI with the Stillen POP charger (K&N filter) with my 91 Sentra SE-R. I agree that it's more economical to clean it and reuse but I figure, it's only $15 now, I'd just get a new one. In my family, we hardly keep cars longer than 5 years anyway.
