96 Legacy Outack Electrical Problem, Help!
Hello,
New to the forum and Subarus. Recently purchased a 1996 Legacy Outback wagon with the 2.2L and 5 speed gearbox. 101,000 miles. I replaced both O2 sensors, cat, and all pads and rotors.
About two weeks into owning the car, the alternator started acting up and then last Saturday finally quit. First sysmtoms were ABS light coming on, jumping needles, slow windows, wipers, etc and dim lights. The first time the problem was brief and corrected itself, the second time I got those symptoms, that was it and the car died. I barely got it to a side street. I replaced the alternator and battery. Car is now running without leaving me on the side of the road. The only problem I have is that when the engine is idling and I apply the brakes, all the lights in the car (headlights, fogs, dash lights), all will dim when I apply the brake pedal.
I hooked the meter up to the battery with the car running and got a good 13.95 or so at idle. I am just wandering is there is something else I missed and need to replace as well. The voltage regualtor is inside the alternator, correct?
I figured I would give you guys a shot, as you all know far more about these cars then I do. Thanks for the help.
Matt

have you tried pulling the codes
Hi Matt.
Have you tried pulling the codes to see if there are any. The regulator is in the alternator. Have you thought that maybe the new alternator/regulator is faulty. Just a few thoughts.
Let us know.
