Whining sound at 140mph
Sorry to bring this thread back to life but I don't think that the sound is coming from the mirrors at all. When you have a high relative wind coming at the car there is a high pressure area created at the windsheild and as it flows backwards over the side of the car there is a low pressure area created at the driver and passenger side windows. This low pressure is basically sucking the window outwards and the escaping air from inside the car is causing this annoying whine sound. Folding the mirrors in is changing the aerodynamics of the side of the car a small bit but it doesn't fix the problem at all for me. When my WRX was new I could go over 120 mph with no noise but as it gets older I can't get past 95 mph without experiencing the whiny wind noise. I'll try to find a fix.
I just got around to reading that. Ha ha... so true. I wish that she would just go to sleep sometimes. I need to find some rufies and slip them in her water... not so I could take advantage of her, but so I could take advantage of the situation.
hey this is too the comment way up the list, about the circuit board with no moving parts,
stand next to a transformer once, or power lines (high voltage tansmission)
there are no moving parts and you hear the 60 cycle hum from the electic ity going throught it, yes there is friction, hence there is a vibration, and 60 hertz you can hear, even at 120 volts, down to 12 volts. am i being a dick yet.

It sounds like a horn... it's loud and right at your left ear because it's originating from the top of the window. It's just like a stall warning horn on a Cessna (if you are a pilot)
I have found a fix, or at least a remedy. Thicken the window seal. I noticed that there wasn't enough pressure being applied to the frameless window so I figured that all I need to do is make the window gasket thicker. I took some foam tape weather stripping (3/8" wide by 1/4" thick) and stuck it in between the flap in the window seal all the way down from front to rear. This allows the window seal to apply more pressure to the window and has helped with the horn sound significantly.

I ran into this as well going down I-5 to Los Angeles. I found my humming/whistling noise was coming from the window. Since the windows are frameless the rubberseal (at speed) doesn't do that good of job.
I had my GF press against the window and the sound went away...she let it go and sound was back. But really, to fix that sound would be to just not drive that fast, heh.
