Rear Wing Removal and stability

Hi all,
I have an 05 sti. I am considering removing the stock trunk/spoiler and replace it with a carbon fiber trunk lid. Just wondering if the removal of the wing will cause a serious lack of stability at high speeds 80+ mph?
Any experiences?
Any thoughts?

Come on guys, someone must have yanked the spoiler on their 05 STI. How did it change the car - any changes at all?

i highly doubt it will make a lick of difference. i drove my mazda protege 130mph and my rx7 150 mph and the rx7 barely had a spoiler if at all, the mazda had a tiny one too. but were not f1 drivers here.

i say go ahead.

I hear ya and agree. The only reason why I brought it up was because of a friends experience with his M3 BMW. He removed the wing and had a drastic change at high velocities - he advised me not to remove it.

yeah man.. i dont know about a stock wing that would actaully make an impact unless the driving is always going over 100mph... if you notice the stock wing doesnt really have a grade to the tilt on it, which a wing that would make an impact would be with a huge tilt on it to actually force the back end of the car down... but in your case, the stock STi wing's tilt isnt enough to change the downforce of the backend enough to even tell the difference...

I have a wrx and have put an STi wing on my car. I have notices a difference in the higer speed range. It does suck the car down a bit and offers some stability.

Your friend's Bimmer was built for the autobahn, so the car was desinged with the wing in mind to provided added stability at high speeds. That is why he noticed a difference when he took the wing off. On the STi, the only thing I see of any benefit from removing the wing was to reduce the weight, thereby making the car faster. Besides, we don't drive nearly fast enough here to make the wing effective.

according to the dealer it shouldnt be removed and they say it does provide downforce for the rear. which im sure it does but it also creates drag at everyday driving speeds which in turn eats up gas. so unless you drive around everyday all day at high rates of speed....change it out. im gonna go wingless.

It doesnt weigh much and if your not into racing it a bunch it just comes down to if you like the looks or not.
