Who Makes Toluene

Who makes Toluene besides Klean-Strip?

Jon

On the can of Toluene that I have (Klean-Strip) it says that I shouldn't use it on Rubber. Does anyone else know anything about this? Do I have the right one? I know that Wes uses this one but I heard somewhere (don't know if Richard told me) that there is 2 types of Toluene. One of them is safe for rubber.

Please confirm.

Thanks,

Jon

This is the one that I bought (but only in the quart size.):

Toluene is fine if it doesn't comprise more than 60% of your fuel. Most gasoline contain at least 10-15% toluene by volume.

XYLENE is what you don't want to put in your gas tank. That stuck wicks the moisture out of anything.

I've heard of people on this site using 1 gallon to 9 gallons of gas. What's the difference between this and what were doing for the same octane rating?

Sorry, I was a little off in my phrasing here...

Most 92 octane pump gas contains ~9% toluene and 8% xylene to begin with.

Race gas can contain up to 27% toluene and 1% xylene.

Xylene IS a component of regular fuel you buy at the pump so it's not like you're pouring something TERRIBLE in your gas tank. Toluene is just a bit less harsh on the rubber products in your fuel system.

I had a friend that worked at Chevron (out at Campbell Industrial) tell me a load about what they mix in to their gas - and he told me that back in the day some Formula One teams ran almost 85% toluene in their gas tanks! Didn't work out too well as it was pretty harsh on the cars, and didn't want to light off when the temps. were cold - but I guess they were trying to combat knock any way they knew how!

well looks like this 1.5 gallons of Toluene is going in to my gas tank tonight we'll see how it goes. I'll make sure I run my car for a while before i get to the track just to make sure that it makes it into my system (this could be why my 103 didn't work out at all).

Who's going down tonight?

Your system has a return line. The fuel from your tank is constantly flowing through the whole fuel system. It hardly takes any time at all for new fuel in the tank to flow.

Toluene is 118 octane vs. the 103 you were running. I think if the toluene compares positively it's that making the difference.

we will see tonight if this toluene mixture yeilds better results. 103 octane was pure though. This mixture only gives me 94 +?

Jon

Are you coming out tonight Richard?

You ran pure 103? Like you drained all of your gas and threw in only 103?

I'm going to try and make it out there. Not to run, but to fool around and watch you run 13.50's!

no... i found out later that I had about 2 gallons or so of 92 in my tank which would contaminate (spelling?) my 103!
