Engine/Power - EJ20T (pre-2006 WRX and JDM) There is replacement for displacement, it is forced induction - OEM 2.0 liter turbo engines in the USDM WRX. 90-94 Legacy Turbo EJ22 turbo engines can also be discussed here.

I know the Brits and the Aussies swear by this stuff in their subaru forums:

NF Race octane booster.

I have been using toluene for over a year in my WRX with no ill effects.
Toluene has a nominal octane of 114.
Octane numbers are additive and simple to calculate.
10gal of 93 octane fuel=930 + 2gal. of 114 octane toluene=228...
Which is 1158 total, which divided by the 12 total gallons is 96.5 total octane of 12 gallons.
So 2 gallons of toluene raises the nominal octane by 3.5...which is 35 'points'.
I buy mine at an automotive paint supply store for $26.19 for 5gal.
Toluene is, AFAIK, much more cost effective than any other 'booster' at my price.
Xylene has a nominal octane of 117, and costs ~$2-$3 more/gallon and thus is not as cost effective.

Toluene is present in all gasoline, and is used to regulate the octane rating in gasoline...even race gas.

Buy it, use it, smile

From Shermin-Williams the Xylene is, oddly I agree, cheaper than the Toluene. I use Xylene now and then, but I'd rather use Toluene even though it has a slightly lower octane because its already used in pump gas.

Although both toluene and xylene are toxic, folks should be especially cautious with Xylene. Also, it's a powerful solvent that has the potential of causing internal damage to your engine. Toluene is the relatively "safer" choice of the two.
