San Jose is the poor man's San Fran. I'd even say if you aren't addicted to the BIG TOWN, go even further south to Santa Cruz, Gilroy, Watsonville, Castroville, and my personal favorites Salinas and Marina.
Seriously, Salinas and Marina could both be middle America towns. Salinas moreso. They do have the gang problem (at least 15 years ago when I lived there, they did).
A note on Gilroy, though, if you lived there, hopefully you like the smell of Garlic. It is the Garlic capital of the world, afterall.

Cannon Beach, Oregon. It's a small one street town. Super mellow over there. Or down the coast in Licnoln City, just cause of the skateparks, don't know if you skate.

I would have to stick with Hawaii, but I really miss the long road trips and no jobs sorta suck. I heard Colorado is awesome. Wouldnt move back to Seattle, Boise or Vegas tho, not my cup o tea anymore. We are looking mainland now in case things just dont work out here. Looking at Cali since they seem to have more jobs in IT and Santa Barbara mainly. I like it there.
I'd have to say that the advantages of living up here in WA are the following:
Canada is 2 hours away. Labor is cheap there. I got my whole car repaired and repainted for $2400 whereas places around here were quoting me $2800 just to partially do body work and paint 1/2 of the car.
You can leave dirty dishes, trash, etc out w/o having to worry about roaches crawling over it.
There are no ants, roaches, flies all over the place.
There are 20+ auto-x's a year and numerous track events at Pacific Raceways and Portland IR.
There are a lot of subaru enthusiasts here.
You can go to ski places within hours of Seattle.
It never gets humid and rarely gets hot.
It doesn't rain as much as they say although it is gloomy 6-9 months out of the year.
Although it is pretty far up north, the winters are mild.
People aren't as much of *******s on the road as CA (but they are still *******s)
There is a decently large asian population although they fall into two categories: FOBs and Katunks.
Theft is kinda high but not as much as CA.
The roads outside of Seattle are pretty wide open. Speed limit is 60 and 70 in other areas.
Cost of living is much less.
Everything is accessible. If I want something, I get it. If I want something in HI, I get it for more and have to wait longer.
Oregon is 5 hrs away and tax free.
Gas is cheaper ($1.80 for premium at Costco)
Cars cheaper and easier to find.
The disadvantages are:
People are not nearly as nice as people in HI.
The beaches suck.
Daylight savings in winter sucks. It gets lit at 8am and dark at 4pm. Add that to a gloomy day and you got a pretty depressing place.
I drive 40-60 miles a day to go to work. I put 6k miles on my STi in 4 months (1500 miles a month). This is sometimes nice but sucks in traffic.
I can't find much else which makes me wonder why I want to go back.

i love ventura santa barbra area which is an hour north of LA. I lived there for 18 years then moved here for school. Beaches are nice good mexican food never that hot because its so close to the beach. Traffic is getting bad and houses are getting expensive but Its home and i love it. Ill most likely move back when im done with school.

I just don't like the cold. There are many nice, serene places to live there like my favorites: Indianapolis and Cincinnati and Chicago, but for me, the small towns are pretty comfortable. It's just that all those places aren't necessarily for everybody.
I loved Nashville. Maybe that's because I didn't live there. We were 30 min. away, so we could go enjoy it anytime we wanted.
Actually, I never lived in the 3 midwest cities I listed, but where I grew up, I was about 40 min from Indy and 2-3 hours from Chi-town and Cincy.

My girlfriend likes the place in Texas (which I can't remember right now) where her Grandma moved to. The woman could actually buy a nice ranch style home on her pension! Try that in Honolulu.
Anybody from Texas?

i'll be moving to Vegas after i grad...living in Chicago for 17 years i've seen -27 with windchill and 110 with humidity...so the weather up in Vegas shouldn't be an issue..except for my suby which they say does not run well in hot weather...

I'd have to continue on with CA. Only because we get the best of both worlds, beach in SoCal, and snow in Tahoe. I would however move out of the area I'm from and transplant myself somewhere on the coast.
