Another option for half the cost is the Impreza Spec C gears with better gearing and are cryo treated by rallispec for half the cost of Gimmie Gears.

yeah, Do Not use just any synthetic gear oil, ... it will have much suck.

I don't think anyone on island has given up the $$$ for Neo gear oil yet.

What oil have some of us used? How much is Neo anyways? Can you get it locally? I would really like to try it and see if 1st is easier to shift into.

Does everyone have the same problem with 1st gear not shifting in cleanly until about 5-10mph? I couldnt believe how hard it was I constantly creep through Haleiwa and have to either jam it into 1st when going again or lug in 2nd. Thought it was me for awhile, but I havent had this issue before. I used to be able to shift my camaro, eclipse, talon and other cars into 1st so easily...

you are not the only one with problems getting back into 1st. Every WRX owner I've ever taken the time to ask has not been able to easily drop back into 1st gear. It REALLY sucks in Auto-X. Unless you SLAM it hard, you're staying in 2nd, and the low end of 2nd is WEAK.

Usually trying to get the car back into 1st results in window washers, blinkers, cruise control, or some other un-wanted piece of equipment turning on. Then you look silly.

I test-drove an SE-R V-Spec today, no problem downshifting to 1st, and the 6MT is very nice... in case any of you wanted to know.

edit: Also, about the gear oil... where can we get it on-island? I know Ron's has it, but its quite expensive. Napa has 80-85W90, but I read that we want 75W90. Napa also has Synergyn Race Gear oil for $14 a quart... kinda pricey, but tempting. Any known issues with race gear oil?

Do a search on "1st and reverse problems" on nabisco or here.

The 1st gear issue is a common problem. It's the price you pay to drive a Subaru.

In my Civic I could downshift in to 1st going like 20MPH

I've had pretty good luck downshifting in 1st but I usually only do it when I'm rolling up to a red light about to change. If I'm going too fast I usually have to double clutch to get it in and I don't even bother trying at AutoX

Reverse is a real pain, but I've learn to pop it into another gear and then into reverse and it usually takes.

I have also experienced the clutch shudder that many talk about. It's generally when it's cold and it doesn't seem to stick around long.

Other then the lousy paint job it's probably my only major issue with the WRX.

Looking forward to the STi tranny...
