Rear Strut/Spring Differences 02-03 and 04-05

Does anyone know the differences in the mounting points of the rear strut assembly for the WRX 02-03 and 04-05 MYs? Can an 02 -03 springs fit on an 04 WRX?

I don't believe the spring is different from the 02-03 and 04-05. The strut top hat might be different.

They are supposed to be different -- but you know what... I have the struts from my 04 STI in my 02 RS and they fit fine... no clunks, no noise.

I was planing you use an aftermarket lowering spring with the stock struts, but maybe I should stick to springs that are for the 04. Hate to go through all the buying only to find out that it doesn't fit. Thanks guys.

Question

I'm still not quite sure what you are trying to pull off after reading your post and the answers that follow.

If you are asking can you use struts designed for '02 & '03 with springs for an '04 or '05 the answer is yes. There is NO need to change your top hats. The problem with struts for '02 & '03 when used with springs and top hats from '04-'05
is that the thread on the strut tops do not go far enough down to trap the springs (there is a slight gap). Simplly add washers between to eat that space until the springs are pinched enough not to clunk.

If that's not what your trying to do... I tried!

I am trying to use the stock 04 struts from my 04 wrx with aftermarket 02-03 springs. I think the front springs work fine but the rear may be the problem. Just going to lowering springs.

Same issue here. The '02-'03 springs should slide right on... but again, if they are not secure on the perch, just washer up. Typically it is the front that needs the washer help (not the rear). Also, be sure to cut one section of bump stop off the front (not required on the rear)... If you have a wagon... only use wagon specific springs or your butt will sag! Not any better looking on a car then on a woman!
