San, have you checked out "Mick the Ginge's" UTEC quick tuning guide from wrxhackers? It had some timing information in there that brought a lot of it into perspective for me. I STILL don't completely understand everything that Richard said above, but when I'm adjusting timing, I DO think of what I feel are some key points:

Advance timing-- add to the numbers in the columns--more power, lower EGT's, but still more prone to knock as you keep advancing.

Retard timing--subtract from the numbers in the columns--higher EGT's, more prone to knock due to the higher EGT's

I can't say this is 100% correct as I've only been playing with the UTEC for 4 months now. I'm sure Richard, Pat or someone will correct me if I'm giving bad info.

Oh....and sorry if the "key points" really sound like they're written for a "retarded" tuner That's honestly what I'm thinking every time I open up the map to edit it, so I thought I'd share the wealth!

That's debatable, but it's the way I've been going. Within reason I would say that a higher timing advance with no knock will produce higher power numbers. The effect on longevity of the motor is what's in question, but hey... We all know it's a gamble at this point, right?

I only started running 12's when I followed Pat's (CRAZY and RECKLESS) lead of 27+ degrees at 80%+ load columns at high RPM... That picked me up nearly 1 mph in the traps and gave me my first 12-second timeslip.

The 3 additional tenths came from fuel tuning and tire pressure.

Hey pat, it that your 92 octane timing map with the 4.2 firmware? That's some agressive timing up high.

I don't think there's any way that he's getting 26 degrees in those load zones (18-20psi I'm betting) on 92 octane...

I think Pat ALWAYS runs a Xylene + 92 mix...

This is a really neat thread that Pat and I were major contributors to (read: fumbled our ways through it) when www.scoobytech.net was a private "invitation only" forum.

http://forums.scoobytech.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=177

Good reading (I got a chuckle out of how frustrated Pat and I were back then).

I have the power under modified fueling down - I just want to see if I can get a good medium power map running on pure 92 octane so I can let my credit card recover from all the half Union 76 100 octane fill-up bills I've been having recently!

San,

Higher timing = lower temps, more chance of knock, less chance of misfire...more power.
Lower timing = inverse.

Ryan,

That is my 95 octane map, but truthfully, when I was on the street and running 92, I drove like a little girl usually. You can see that in the lower MLPs, I had ramped down my timing. The slightly high but lower timing in the lower MLPs helped me out on the big H2 hills where my temps liked to skyrocket even at very low rpms.

I'm assuming that Richard is wanting to be able to WOT on 92 octane on the streets (since he doestn't race at the track any longer.) I posted my map only as a reference because my only advice of dropping 2-3 degrees across the board didn't seem to resolve his issues.

Yep. Not that I WOT everywhere, but it's nice to clear out the carbon every once in a while. I mean there are a lot of people that buy these cars and mod them and have NEVER gone to the track - there must be some spirited driving going on somewhere!

Thanks for the offer.

I have to set my throttle position sensor, which I may do tomorrow. My number is 422-2595.

San, can you please record this for me if you do watch? I think this might be a close one.

Now back to the topic.
