But I didn't really think much about static electricity until now. I guess the general rule is to stay out of your car while fueling, to reduce static charge buildup.

I SAW A YELLOW FERARRI (SP)? CATCH FIRE ON A TV SHOW, HE JUST CAME UP AND IT CAUGHT ON FIRE BECAUSE IT WAS SO HOT...

 

WTLY, haha , nah saw this b4 on tv a looooong time ago, thats why i never risk using the phone or going back to sit in my car while the pump is running...

Cell Phone = no problem (don't you guys watch Mythbusters?)

Getting in and out of the car = BIG NONO.

Tapping gas nozzle on metal fillerneck to "get the last drop" = BIG NONO.

hmm, didnt see that episode of mythbusters... but yea, going in and out of the car gives u static charge from ur clothes rubbing on the seat or something like that...

 

As someone whose spent most of his "driving age" life in the Northeast, I can say that although static might cause a fire, it's so unbelievably small a risk that to get worked up about it is silly. It's very common for people to get in and out of their car while pumping gas when it's freezing cold outside - I've done it plenty of times, and I'm still here! I think it's on snopes.com that they point out people pump gas into their cars about 16 to 18 billion times per year in the US, and there have possibly been 150 fires related to static electricity.

if anything all u gotta do is touch some part of the shell of the car to take the static away but in hawaii i doubt it has happened

 

in Hawaii with our typical high humidity...static electricity isn't too much of a problem...

It sure makes working on computer and electronics components easier...
