fueling at the pump
two questions really here: 1. has anyone noticed a difference putting in less than 91 octane in your wrx?? 2. on several occasions, the gas pump has kicked off with the auto stop, and gas has spilled out. this has never happened with any of my other cars. i guess i could slow the pumping when i hit >11 gal. but wondering what ur experiences are. It may sound dumb, but i would appreciate a few honest answers. the rest can flame on.....

1.) Less then 91 octane is bad for your car and should only be used in emergency situtations. using less then 91 may cause the engine to start pinging, which can cause long term damage. You will also notice decreased performance on less then premium gas.
2.) I usually let the pump sit for about 10 seconds or more before I pull it out, shaking it all the while so I don't spill any. If you are still spilling gas, then I don't know what to say.

Source of info:
On my previous cars and dropping the gas tank i noticed a tube that was used to let air escape when fueling up. This prevented the bubbles in the tank that would presurize when it started getting full.
I theorize that the pressure of air trapped in the top of the tank pushed the gas out of the tank becuase it had to buble to the surface so to speak. Thus it spilled.

Make sure that you put the nozzle in the tank as far as it will go. That will make it stop a bit sooner and should keep it from spilling.

1. Never put in less than 91 Octane. It's usually only $.20 more per gallon, which is like $2 per fill up. You can afford the cost difference in $2 increments right?
2. I'm not sure on your issue. If you want, I could move this thread to 'Maintenance and Warranty" and you might get better responses there. I didn't move it yet because it's right on that line of General/Maint As for me, mine stops when it's full, and for some reason that seems to be 13.9xx gallons every time No overflows though.

The knock control system is active from ~2000rpm to ~6000RPM, give or take a few 100rpm based upon application/mapping. It's also active above moderate load (under boost). It is very unusual to hear audible ping within those conditions with deltadash consistently showing no drop-outs in knock correction. It may be possible that the knock correction isn't taking out enough timing do totally surpress knock but I have yet to see the detection ability of the system to be amiss.
BTW, if you try filling up a stock car with 87 octane, it will ping instantly, pull back timing, send the ignition advance multiplier well below 4 which will make the car run on its rich fuel map. For the most part, it will run ping-free. But every now and then, it will try to advance back to normal. And in doing so, it may ping audibly.
