Plugs,Trans, and Rear Differential
Plugs,Trans, and Rear Differential
I know there are other topics out there on this and This might be better in the Transmission Forum. I cant seem to find all the answers for the ?'s I have. Sorry if Iam asking ?'s that have been beaten to death......
I have a MY02 2.5 RS 5spd M/T, Iam going to change my plugs, Trans Fluid, and Rear Diff. Fluid. I need to know:
1) Wich are the best performance plugs to get for a MY02 2.5 RS?
I dont expect gains or anything but do want the best plug I can get for my car.
2) Wich brand and type of Trans Fluid , without having to add shock oil, Seems to provide the best results as far as smooth shifts, good protection (ecspecially in Hard/Fast shifting conditions).
3) Which brand and type for the rear diff. that meets the same criteria? Can I use the same Fluid in the Rear Diff. that I put in the Trans?
4) How many Quarts of Trans fluid does the 5spd M/T hold? Also, how much does the rear diff. hold?
I really appreciate your time to read and respond to my ?'s.

1) NGK coppers, part number BKR7ES-11
2) Factory gear oil. If you really want synthetic, make sure it's a GL5 fluid and has limited-slip additives to help the synchros. Really good synthetic gear oil is actually too slick for Subaru gearboxes, which depend on some friction for the synchros to work properly.
3) Whatever you put in the gearbox, put in the diff too.
4) 3.7 quarts gearbox, .8 quarts. You'll need 5 total obviously, with a little leftover.

I'm still on the stock fluid, but I am about to switch to Redline Lightweight Shockproof. From what I have read and heard, it is the best choice for helping the synchros work better, which is more important in my mind than the absolute lowest coefficient of friction on the bearings and gears.
I also might use regular 75w90 Redline GL5 fluid first so I can compare the differences.

I've heard good things about redline lightweight shockproof in other forums. I agree with you too, id prefer to have the best fluid for the synchros, not the lowest coefficient of friction. And I have heard that the synchros require a bit of friction from the fluid to work their best. Correct me if Im wrong!

Thanks for the tip, do you know where I can get this stuff? Or can i just go to any big automotive store?

Call around and see if you can source it locally. If you have to buy it direct from Redline it will cost you more for international shipping and potentially customs. Lachute may carry it, and if not, it would be a good time for them to get a wholesale account.
