My RS Woes
Well, let me give some background before I jump into the current problem...
1999 RS, bought it in 2001 with few enough miles to still fall under powertrain warranty...
I've had the engine rebuilt 3 times (you'd think the lemon law would apply) I'm not going to go into details as to why, suffices to say, Subaru never really figured it out. They blamed it on low oil which is a load since if they could prove that was the problem they wouldn't have applied the warranty. Anyway...
My check engine light came out before the last rebuild, reporting M02 and M04 (I think that's right) which equates to Misfire in cylinder's 2 and 4 (thus 02 and 04). Having faith one more time in the ability of the subaru mechanics, I let them rebuild the engine again (all of this still just barely under warranty-they wouldn't apply the lemon law due to the fact that the previous owner had installed a Strumung (sp?) exhaust... I digress). So, the engine ran fine, I broke it in and about 1000 miles after the break in period (roughly 1000 miles, so 2000 miles total) the check engine light came on again. M02. Misifre cylinder 2. Going back a little, we had trouble with that cylinder's spark plug and the piston hitting the spark plug. You'd think that would send off some warning lights, but they blamed it on carbon build up. We'll come back to that later. So I went back to the dealership about 2 weeks ago, and they suggested new wires and a coil pack. Nada. No help. So i checked the gap on the spark plug. It was off, so I fixed it. nothing. Still getting the check engine light. M02. So here's what I know now. The wires are good. There's nothing wrong with the coil (I suppose there could be a giant coincidence in there somewhere) and I swapped the spark plugs with 2 and 4 and still get this misfire on 2. What do I have left to check? I've tried different octanes (despite my misgivngs about that accomplishing anything), there's nothing wrong with the gas cap, and the only thing not stock on the engine now, is the air filter: meaning (I used to have a JC sports but got wary of the fact they went under) the stock intake box at the front is now a conical K&N filter. So for all intents and purposes, it's still pretty stinken stock. So, I'm getting fed up with working on this thing. Overall I have faith in the car (though it's quickly dwindling) and I am very much against getting the runaround at the subaru dealership in san Jose (on steven's creek). I don't particularly want to start driving to redwood city and would rather just get the answer and fix the damn thing myself. I've been considering doing an engine swap with an EJ20 and just be done with this engine altogheter, but that kind of change is a little out of my price range at the moment. Suggestions? Still looking to fix the one I've got before considering a swap...
