ignition timing (not subaru)
ok, 1998 Nissan Frontier
2.4L I-4
i am trying to find the optimum power output for the timing.
i turned my distributor cap at idle and got several results, as expected, and ended up leaving it all the way to one side (there are guards that only let it go so far) and its at a higher idle rpm now.
also, after about a half day of driving, my gas mileage is obviously way down and the exhaust tip is blacker than its ever been.
is this over advanced or retarded? im not sure which it is.
how can i know what the maximum power output will be?
comments welcome, good or bad.

Let's see. You have the timing all the way one way. The idle has gone up to a point higher than normal. Sounds to me like you have it advanced too much. There once was a time when a good mechanic could tune a car by ear. They knew just how much to move this and that to get the car running good. I used to do it. But nowadays, you CANNOT tune by ear. With your vehicle being a 1998, I would say that with your 'manual' timing set where it is, the ECU is doing everything in it's power to minimze any damage that could occur in it's current condition. This could mean pulling the timing back alot farther than it would normally. Increasing your injector on time, causing your mileage to decrease. Is the vehicle running warmer than normal?? If it is, you could be looking for trouble. Noticed any unusual popping of backfires from either the exhaust or intake?
My suggestion would be to put the timing back where you found it originally. You'll probaly find that unless you do some SERIOUS power modifications to the engine, the normal setting will get you the best overall performance. Like it or not...

ok, i set it back to the stock 20 degrees BTDC and it ran a lot better. my mileage was crap though still.
i also filled the tank tonight. it accelerated and idled a lot smoother after that, i think i may have had a bad tank of gas.
may i have ****ed my valves up or my injectors by getting them carbon fouled or something?
i want good mileage, i drive a lot.

Run some injector cleaner through it, and get Chevron for the next tank or two. If it is fouled up, the stuff will come clean, shouldn't be too hardened. It was definitely running rich though to compensate for the advance.

If you won't go to Chevron, go to 76 or Shell instead. Chevron charges more, but they sell good stuff. Those 3 have the cleanest fuel, they leave less deposits. Arco is just like the other 'discount' stations- they buy the cheapest gas someone will sell to them. In your truck, it's not normally a big deal, but in a motor you really really care about, run the good stuff. Anyways, a tank of Chevron is just like running a bottle of injector cleaner.
