Engine/Power - non turbo (All non turbo Imprezas) Who needs a turbo when you have 2500cc? Cams, intakes, exhausts, etc. The 2.2L and 1.8L Subies are cool too.

Header problem.

Header problem.

I recently intstalled borla headers on my97 Outback Sport. One of the studs snapped and had to be drilled out. don't know how but sumhow I drilled deep. not too bad at first just a drip everynow and then. engine temp hasn't gone up or anything. Now two months later it is starting to seep out around the nut and is smoking. the engine is still keeping a good temp. Is there anything I can do or should i take it in to get it looked at.

Did you use a stud in the new threaded hole? You should remove the header, clean everything, install the stud with high-temp loctite, and tighten everything back up and let it set before you run the motor. Shouldn't leak after that.

I wish they'd just put the holes in the right place... I ended up having to drill out one of the holes, and I still barely got it on there. I mean, all they needed was a gasket for the template, but they still managed to f it up...

At least mine havent cracked.... yet.....

I've done 4 different Borla installs, never really had an issue with fitment. But, the Gen IVs shouldn't crack anyway. They solved that by removing the crossbrace on the driver's side that caused the issue.

Yes i used all new hardware. I also tried using loctite. It was the red stuff not sure if it was high temp. I let it set for 4-5 hours. Went to the dealership today. the service dept. said there was nothing i could do. I don't believe it. gonna tear it apart this weekend again see if i can figure sumthing out. Thanx for the input.

How would one go about taking a stud out (if it wasn't snapped)? Do they just screw in? One of mine on the driver's side is bent, and I believe I may end up messing up the threads if I ever have to take it off. I'd like to drill the hole out on the header flange a little more so it fits better, and maybe install a new stud on the head. It doesn't leak or anything, but I had to kinda force it on there when I put it on.

TIA

yes they screw in the same way as the bolts do, best way to get them out would be to put two bolts on in, tighten them together, and then take a socket and back them off, the whole stud should come out with i, at work the stud comes out before the nut does, then we hafta replace them

I'm not familiar with that i'll have to try it. Thanx. Today I drained the cooling system, took the headers of and cleaned it all out. rethreaded the hole just to make sure the threads weren't messed up or something. Put some high temp loctite on the stud and put all back together. I let it sit a couple hours. then fill up the coolant and started it. Now i got coolant spraying out. tried to tighten the nuts a little more. Gonna see how it looks in the morning.
