Custom Exhaust
Hi,
I currently am running an all custom piping exhaust with an aftermarket muffler. I still want to keep the performance but am getting sick of the loud muffler. I was wondering if anyone has done or heard of hooking up a stock WRX muffler or something to custom 2.5" piping?? Will that still yield the same performance enough though i change the mufflers?? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

if the ex. system doesn't have any resonators in it, you may want to consider adding one or even two. they don't really impede the flow, and help cut the sound a good deal. by running your stock muffler will pretty much plug up that nice open system you have. i would just try to find a good free flowing, but quiet muffler. thats what i'm in the proccess of doing for my talon. no cat, and no resonator tend be a little loud.

I am still in the slow process of finding all the parts for a custom cat-back for my 2.2L. I was told since I'm not running hi-flow cats the sound won't change too much. Any truth to this? I was wanting to run Stainless Steel components (2.25") from the cat-back so I was debating, should I remove the resonator and replace it with straight 2.25" tubing or try to find a stainless resonator? My goal here is to remain quiet and look stock, but have a good scavenging exhaust system for cheap. Also, the muffler I'm buying is kind of big so that should muffle the sound somewhat even though it’s straight through. Anyone know where I can find stainless exhaust flanges?

I don't know how much of a difference, if any, having a 2.2 will make, but when I had my custom exhaust on w/o a resonator, I hit 120 dbA (measured as closely as possible to the SAE standards and no other mods). I would suggest a resonator. A stainless steel one would be nice (but pricey) and would definitely keep the noise level down

LMAO, 120 dB? That is freakin loud. Doesn't the law require that exhaust noise remain below 95 dB's. Thanks for the reply, I believe I will get resonator
. The longer the resonator the more quieting effect it has right?

It was 120dbA of pure Sube heaven. It was just a bit embarassing when I would turn the car on and set off alarms. It's not annoyingly loud like a Harley, or high pitched like a Honda. It was more of a threatening sound that made a lot of people think twice. I would suggest getting a stainless steel resonator. A regular glasspack would work, but just not as well. You shouldn't have any trouble finding one. A good muffler shop can order one for you.
