Air bag light on and horn not working
I have a 1997 SUBARU IMPREZA OUTBACK AWD Engine Type: 2.2L H4 MFI/FI
The airbag light has been on since I got it and the horn does not work. I have been very nervous about taking it to a dealer as I know I will get ripped off. A friend has the same car and the same problem and I wondered if anyone else has had the problem and knows the fix. The airbag light and horn issues may be unrelated but the previous owner did report that they stopped working around the same time.
Thanks,
Richard

The part is also often called a clock spring. The repair is easy but you will be removing the airbag so do disconnect the battery. After that I hit the brake to discharge and current that may remain. The hardest part is pulling off the steering wheel. When you take the steering wheel nut lose do not take it all the way off. Then grasp the wheel on each side and pull hard alternately on each side until it pops free. Leaving the nut on will keep the wheel from hit you on the head when it comes free. The next trick is disconnecting the air bag harness clip. It’s a two step deal. There is a tab on the mail end push it down while sliding the green latch on the female clip toward the male end. I also had to use a screwdriver to help pop it free. Always be carefully working with the air bag. Never let the air bag face you. I did all the airbag work from the passenger seat so that just in case it did go off it would not hit me.
