2.2L intake drawbacks?
i talked to someone at alta sports (now gone) in portland about aftermarket intakes on the 99 2.2L, and they said the mass airflow sensor was no good and could not communicate correctly with the rest of the computer to compinsate for the increase in air flow. anyone know if they are right? and what can i do if its true.

there was actually a huge recall on the 99 maf cars. and actually the later 99 Ls were switched to MAP. (like mine) it would be worth your time to find out if you have a MAF or MAP. if you have a digital camera make our lives easier and take a picture of your engine bay.

i have done some research, and and 98% sure that its a MAF, not a MAP. what if it was a MAP though? is that better? to start an N/A project, i though basic breathing of the engine, ie intake headers exhaust, was the first step. if, with my car that is not the best approach, i am curious to the next best way to go. is it worth starting on engine enternals, cams valves springs pistons ect. ? not many people have 2.2 projects going, and i wouldnt mind being a pioneer, but trial and error takes a good amount of time and especially money, both of which i am short on. i am a auto tech student and have access to nearly any tool and test equipment you can think of through the school, so i feel i have an advantage to starting on a 2.2.

ok well i have a 99L myself and i have come to the conclusion that is is MAP. im not saying they all are. in fact i doubt there are very many. but there are SOME. MAF cars show bigger gains from intakes but also have a very high failure rate on the 99s. once again if you have a camera please take a picture of the engine bay

Newbie question: Differences between MAF and MAP? I'm guessing MAP determines the correct air/fuel ratio based on intake manifold vaccum rather than determining the amount of incoming air?
i believe there is a huge article on MAP vs. MAF on cobbs website. the MAF sensor is easily recongized by its clindrical shape, and that it is directly attached to you air box. air goes from teh air box through the sensor into the plastic tube then to the manifold.
i have a 95 2.2l, although i have heard of an ebay intkae addind 10whp and 10ft-lbs torque (dyno sheets are on iclub somewhere) i have not put one in. i instead (cheaper route) put a cone filter on instead of the air box. doing this allowed me to remove the airbox (big and hard to work around) and the snorkus (hidden under fender, bigger then airbox) so i dropped 5lbs form the car and gained very little hp (1 or 2). with the MAF sensor a specail adapter plate must be made in order to connect the filter to the MAF or else you have to lop off the flange on the MAF and slide the filter over it (hose clamp time). since i put my filter on my car has been throwing a CEL, first it was teh MAF (i over oiled the filter and destroyed the MAF) so after finding a used MAF ($30 used, $350 new) and outting it in w/clean filter the MAF code went away. however odly enough my car throws a MAP code which i dont have.
any way this code does not efect how the car runs (as far as i can tell). i might be running a bit more rich but beyond that nothign specail. hope this helps.
also for you building, you might wanna try getting a used 2.2 from a junkyard to practice on being they are relatively inexpensive and you wont mess yours up. (i am planning to do this)
