Exhaust leak at turbo????

Hey guys

The past couple of days my car's been noisier than usual. (more pronounced flutter and turbo whine), plus some rattling. (after a dealer visit regarding a clutch problem..... )

I was under the hood checking out the heatshield to see if it was loose (turns out dealer didn't tighten it properly) Anyway, long story short I took off the turbo heatshield and found this.

soot on the inside of the heatshield

It looks like it's coming from the wastegate pivot as there is soot on it as well, and it matches up with the heatshield.

Anyone ever heard of this kind of leak before? I'm guessing the turbo has to be replaced if it is indeed a leak?
Would this cause a an abnormaly loud squelling and fluttering noise while going into boost?

Thanks

Mine is making a lot of noise too. I am going to take the shield off and see if it looks like yours. Thanks for the info.

mine is making horrible loud noise and what sounds like rattling....no heat shield on, catless DP.

my guess is that one of the wheels is trying to spin but cant.....like its broken...either a little oil got into the exhaust side of the turbo and caught fire...hence some white smoke coming out my exhaust. and im making no boost at all...and it makes that noise when the turbo starts to spool

On any turbo car, that is not an uncommon place for a leak. Lots of heat and vibration can loosen up the seal or degrade the gasket

These symptoms are hard to understand, white smoke from the exhaust is not indicative of oil burning. No boost at all? Wheels trying to spin, but turbo spools? You really should get a heat shield back on, it'd sure help you w/ IC heatsoak.
