knocking is also known as pinging, kind of sounds like a metallic ping in the engine , you will know it when you here it.

rod knock and detonation "knock" are entirely different sounds, det sound more like a tapping or even ticking, a rod knock is just that

Piston slap is just becuase the components are loose when cold so they shake a bit making noise, at least what i understand about it.
Pinging is like dropping bb's into a tin can.

Piston slap is more common with forged pistons, which expand more when hot. This means that when they are cold, there is a larger gap between the piston and cylinder. It should go away as engine temp rises, gradually fading out within a few minutes of startup. Your explanation is correct, I just wanted to add a little detail.
BBs, nails in a blender, popcorn... anything that is a harsh metallic discordant sound.
