I'm picking up an STi on tuesday...i want a couple mods right off the rip like an intake, tbe, uppipe...If i was going to a performance shop and had them custom make all of the pipes, should i have to worry about unexpected problems? because even though i will be paying half the price i would think if the pipes are made nicely enought they would work as anyother aftermarket . If not which Short ram, tbe (carbon TI looks nice, but i think i've heard it's REALLY loud), uppipe (perrin?)..something that would sound pretty quiet but still have a nice purr to it.

For the TBE a custom setup would have to include the correct hanger locations, a bung for the O2 sensor, and a flex joint somewhere in the line. I would recommend stainless steel piping in 3" diameter all the way back. If a shop hasn't built an STi TBE before, it will take a bit of time to get all of the curves correct.
If you want to go off the shelf, there are several complete systems out there such as Cobb, APS, Perrin, TurboxXS, and others. You can always piece things together like Helix and Bosal with catback from anyone.
I recommend the off the shelf systems just because they fit perfectly and have proven results.
There are a lot of different options out there, so keep searching.
As for intakes, I've never been a fan. But some of my friends are having great success on the STi with the Injen intake. As a bonus it comes in crinkle red to match the intake manifold in the STi.

i have a wrx wagon so i might not have that much valuable input for this thread but i heard sti's dont respond well to bolt ons. i think engine managent combined with a tbe setup would be a good option. maybe the acessport??? im running a perrin d/p which i hate and a hks hi-power catback. i love the hks but had nothin but problems with perrin in general.

Thanks Eric. I forgot to mention that engine management needs to be a key component just like any other. TBE's have a tendancy to cause boost spikes and check engine lights on the STi. Definitely look into a reflash, AP, or other system and a quality tune.

so i should worry about getting ecu around the same time when i put on an exhaust and intake? i've read a little about ecutek, and utec (but i've heard some bad things about utec as well). But for now i'll save up to get TBE, intake, boost controller & ecu. How does that sound?

No boost controller. The ECU reflash will control your boost.
You can drive around with just the TBE and/or intake for a while before getting your reflash, but you may get check engine lights. Also, you won't be taking full advantage of the power until you get flashed.

and no, the hks carbon ti is not that loud. i'd say its in the top 75% in terms of loudness.
I have the K&N short ram on my 04 sti. It works great. As far as mods go definately go for the ecu first. This will eliminate most probs in performance once you start adding mods. For mere ease of use i recommend the cobb acessport. it has different stage maps and is easy to change between them. happy motoring
