They should last the whole length of the cars life if you take care of them. If you are planning on keeping the stock turbo and you drive hard, I would recommend getting a turbo timer or atleast letting your car idle for around 3 minutes before turning it off completely.

The stock turbo (TD04 turbo) is around $300 to replace.

If you head over to www.deadboltspeed.com they can do a TD04 rebuild, port and polish, etc. They have a "Monster TD04" which has been ported when their "Monster Port" technology .

Here is a quote from their website:

The turbo that made us famous! We take a standard, stock WRX TD04 turbo and then let our mad scientists go to work! It gets our world-famous Monster Port(TM) process, which impoves spoolup, midrange power, lowers peak torque RPM level, and improves acceleration. Our Monster Port(TM) process was developed over a period of 2 years and included over 30 different angles, grinds, and smoothing techniques to produce the best possible results on today's Monster TD04 turbos. Also available with ceramic coating, compressor housing outlet port, and compressor wheel upgrades.
The monster TD04 starts at $400

As for installation of the turbo if you plan on replacing it yourself.. It should only take around an hour to two hours at max. Refer to this TurboXS' guide to installing turbochargers yourself:

http://www.turboxs.com/Stage%204%20I...structions.htm

For more information about upgrading the turbo and also some general information about the WRX turbo, read this faq put together by Unabomber over at Nasioc.com:

Hope this helped

Subaru says that the stock turbo does not need a cooldown period (see the following post for more info). Most modern turbos seem to do just fine without cooling down.
