Engine/Power - EJ20T (pre-2006 WRX and JDM) There is replacement for displacement, it is forced induction - OEM 2.0 liter turbo engines in the USDM WRX. 90-94 Legacy Turbo EJ22 turbo engines can also be discussed here.

Why is the USDM EJ20 an open-deck block?

Why is the USDM EJ20 an open-deck block?

If japan has always had closed-deck EJ20 engines on their WRX's, why is it that the USDM has to get a redesigned open-deck EJ20? As far as I know closed-deck engines are always supposed to be more reliable with a forced induction setup.

Did the japanese-spec engines have some sort of gasket problems or something? Is it just for better cooling?

Are the new-generation WRX's in japan still sporting a Closed-Deck Block, or is it similar to what we have now in the US?

I just read another topic on the STi's semi-closed deck design and these questions popped in my mind.

Any insight will be appreciated.

Follow this link. All you need to know is right here

Newer JDM WRXs have the same ej205 we have, with little tweaks like higher compression and AVCS. It isn't only the USDM GD WRX that has been stuck with this engine.

The new STi has a semi-closed deck, not an open deck.
