Engine/Power - EJ20T (pre-2006 WRX and JDM) There is replacement for displacement, it is forced induction - OEM 2.0 liter turbo engines in the USDM WRX. 90-94 Legacy Turbo EJ22 turbo engines can also be discussed here.

sounds like a leak. do you get it only during cold start ups? and as the engine warms it goes away? if so, you got yourself a leak.

Yea i just had the turboxs up-pipe installed and i probably hear a similar sound. Its like a high pitched whistle that starts when the turbo starts to spool. When im at high boost levels it is more pronounced. Its definitely the turbo making the noise cause i dont hear it at idle or when the car is out of gear. I thought maybe the wastegate was opened all the way (which was causeing the sound), but i think i still get some low level boost. I dont know what to do and my car is sounding like ****! Please can a moderator or someone help us??

p.s. when i got the up-pipe installed the people at SpeedSport Technik (in Norwalk CT) said that i would not need knew gaskets because of the low miles.....i think maybe they were wrong.

Exhaust leaks, including turbo/uppipe related ones, generally don't sound like whistles. (From what you're saying I am imagining a clear note). Exhaust leaks are always pulsed... from something that the inexperienced ear would pass off as a "muscle car" (heh) to something sounding like a banshee that gets more shrill with higher RPMs. Whatever it is, you don't hear it under idle or neutral because there's not enough exhaust CFM to produce the noise. This does not meant its turbo related. Also, a wide open wastegate won't make a whistle sound.

Are you hearing a whoosh with a high note? Or are you hearing nothing and then a pulsed shrill that turnes into the loudest, scariest freakin' shriek? The latter is an uppipe leak. The first description is the semi-beautiful sound of a small turbo spooling.

I'm slowly coming to the opinion that gaskets should always be changed. Not changing gaskets is a luck-of-the-draw maneuver.

I am thinking about getting a Perrin up-pipe for my next mod and am curious to find out what your solution might be, if you find one that is.

Mandra, where did you get your Perrin up-pipe? I have been dealing with Vivid Racing and would like to find a more reliable place to do business.

If anyone else has a suggestion on a good Perrin dealer, I'm all ears.

hey mmboost,

yea if keep my rpms down, like before 4000rpm, it sounds normal...as soon as i mash on the petal i start to hear the sweet sound of the spooling then is pulsates with the ungly shrill sound. Is this what an up-pipe leaks sounds like?? Well anyways i just went to Quirk Subaru in Bangor Maine and they said that they would replace the gaskets. I made sure that with my modified car they would not void my warrenty. I think that this will prob cost me 2 hours of work and a rate of $45/hr. Not bad but if i were to do it again i would definitely replace my gaskets with the up-pipe. Well thanks a lot for your input, i greatly appreciate it.

peace in the middle east

What you now describe sounds like an uppipe leak. Sounds good. Really nice price on the labor. And, I'm really surprised they agreed to work on the pipe at all. You must be in an area where there's so little hopping up of cars that the dealership doesn't know to be wary Glad it all worked out.

What about you, Mandra?

Check for a leak between the turbo and the Samco Y-pipe. I had one and it whistled under boost.
