upping boost on '04

My friennds brother said that he is running his '04 WRX on 20 pounds of boost. I didn't think this would be possible without running into detonation. He has no upgrades to his fuel system. I mentioned that i wanted to up boost but also upgrade to STI injectors and walbro fuel pump. He said that the ECU wouldn't read the increased fuel delivery, but i figured it would, I am looking for an expert opinion. do i need a new brain if i upgrade fuel delivery and boost, i plan to run a AVR-C not just a mbc

Thanks for helping a NEWBIE

I learned my lesson 04 rex with cai, bov and mbc running 17.5lbs of boost. It melted the probe on the egt sensor and now my car runs like crap, until i can fix the turbo. Tom

I run 16.5 in every gear all day long using an Apexi AVC-R ebc. The wrx can handle 18 psi. 20 psi is stupid with no other upgrades. Get ready to buy a new engine.

the only really safe way to increase boost on a wrx is a reflash as a minimum. even then, he probably won't see much over 16psi, and it definitely won't be for the entire rpm range.

the wrx engine can handle 20psi just fine, as long as it's from an upgraded turbo that isn't blowing extremely hot air, and has upgraded fuel injectors, exhaust, ecu, etc...

the stock ecu will not work properly with larger injectors, another reason reflashing or other engine management is necessary.
