up pipe question...
From what Ive read here at I-club gutted upipes are very turbulent and you are better off buying a catless one with a flex section. Im buying the STI @ http://www.subaruxtras.com/SearchRes...?CategoryID=39 (page 9) which is expensive ($245 is the cheapist I've seen new) but I have credit with subaru and it will only cost me about $100. If you dont plan on upgrading the turbo buy one that has the same inside diamiter as the turbo inlet to ensure maximum velosity. If you do plan on upgrading the turbo you might want to look into Helix.
since you're going to have to remove your downpipe anyways, you should throw your downpipe on there(if you don't have one) while you're doing this. Gruppe-S has a good deal for helix DP UP needed gaskets and a CEL fix.
Good deal, good people.
Good deal, good people.
thanks for all the help guys, i really appreciate it.
i picked up a 321 staneless steel vishnu up pipe (the one w/o the flex) used from a fellow i clubber, anyone have any reviews or comments on this? it was a good deal, so i jumped on it, and figured i could always sell it again.

best up
i agree that gutted stocker is the cheapest, but if you do decide to buy one from a reputable company i would highly recommend the Crucial Racing Systems up-pipe. It is made with 321 steel like vishnu but comes black ceramic coated.

I wish I could find the thread on nabisco...but some guy actually did the comparison between stock, gutted stock, and "nifty $300 aftermarket" uppipes. Guess what...gutted and aftermarket performed IDENTICALLY.
The turbulence argument might be true from the standpoint of a physics professor...but in the real world it doesn't make much (any perceptible/measurable) difference.
If you're tight on funds and want factory fitment, gut yours. If you have a bit of cash, I say get the STi catless one for factory fitment and that sexy "SUBARU" on the heatshielding.

Like I said that is just what Ive read here at I-club. If thats true Ill have to buy something else with that credit and gut mine. Thanks for the info, Ill have to look for that thread.
I didnt find that thread but I did find this (this was not done on a dyno) http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/show...t=gutted+upipe Great gains but it seems like too much of a PITA for me (Im too lazy) so I think I will buy that STI upipe and pay a pro to install it.

Two facts, go figure !
1. Japanese replace their OEM catless uppipe with aftermarket uppipe. Read Impreza magazine ( Japanese- Subydude sell them ) and you will find many products and articles about it. ( That's why you get many used JDM uppipes !!)
2. PDE tested their uppipe and found 4 HP more than JDM sti uppipe on the same car.

If you get a stainless steel uppipe, make sure you either heat wrap it or get a high heat external coating (don't do the inside unless they can warranty that it won't flake off into the turbo!!). SS does not hold heat like cast iron, but will last boatloads longer and heat = boost. I got a Helix flex and wrapped in with thermal wrap and high heat spray sealer. Not a single issue.
I gutted an uppipe once and when I was done (including what I thought was an EXCEPTIONAL cleaning) I found a bad stud. Removing the bad stud was a ***** involving pounding on the flanges.
You'd be surprised how much crap came out of the pipe as a result. I'm not saying not to gut a pipe. I'm saying clean the hell out of it before you reinstall it.
