Engine/Power - EJ20T (pre-2006 WRX and JDM) There is replacement for displacement, it is forced induction - OEM 2.0 liter turbo engines in the USDM WRX. 90-94 Legacy Turbo EJ22 turbo engines can also be discussed here.

Question turbo timers

i know a little about the turbo timers. i know they cool the engine instead of the person leaving the car idle. But how does it entirely work? Shouldn't Subaru at least offer it as an accessory? I mean come on, most people drive turbo engines to the limit, but not many leave it idle.

Turbo timers run the engine for a predeterined period so that oil is circulated through the turbo bearing to cool it down after being run hard. If you dont do this on alot of turbo cars the oil is baked in the bearing and cokes (boils leaving carbon deposits in the bearing), which kills you're turbo eventually. This isnt an issue on the new WRX's (02 and up) because of the way the water jacket is designed. On the new WRX's, after you shut of the car the water in the turbo water jacket starts boiling of. The water vapor makes it's way into the reservoir and "cool" water from the block flows into the jacket to take its place. In this way water is circulated through the water jacket after you turn of the car until the turbo cools to a point where it cant boil of the water anymore, which is alot colder than it has to be to coke oil. Thanks to this little deisgn feature a turbo timer is not something you need to worry about and unlike previous turbo subarus they no longer have to reccomend you do a 3-4 minute cooldown when you shutdown after a hard run.

Common sense is to let a car cool down if it has recently been run very hard. I'll let my car idle if I have been going up a steep grade or if I have been heavy on the happy pedal.
I still think turbo timers are a waste of money, especially on a WRX. Human brain should hopefully come as stock equipment on the driver's shoulders.
