Engine/Power - EJ20T (pre-2006 WRX and JDM) There is replacement for displacement, it is forced induction - OEM 2.0 liter turbo engines in the USDM WRX. 90-94 Legacy Turbo EJ22 turbo engines can also be discussed here.

no tension could have thrown the timing off. i think we have interferance engines, so it would be good to make sure the valves are good. it would be better to replace what you can now while you're working on it instead of having to put your car out of commision later on.

daaamn. kinda looks like the cage inside the bearing completely failed and the pulley just ended up riding on the cover. crazy. that or the bolt wasnt torqued to spec. either way, as the previous member was saying, depending on your mileage, it may be work doing a complete rebuild/inspection. i too always forget which desgin PREVENTS pistons from smacking valve upon belt failure. either interferance or non interferance. GL! hope nothing else is critically damaged!

Its in the name, interference = valves interfere with the travel of the piston. Subarus are interference motors and will bend valves if the timing belt is removed/destroyed and the motor is forcefully rotated. I can't recall the brand name but there are forged non-interference pistons available for the subie 2.0/2.5L engines. Its basically like a hemi piston with space cut out for the valves to have free travel.

You can drop one of them tiny boroscope/fiber optic cameras into the spark plug hole and take a look at the valves/pistons. You could probably see abnormal wear on the top of the piston where it might have hit the valves even if you can't see obvious damage to the valves themselves.
