Running too rich
Hi dudes... i was wondering wut can make my rex run leaner... i think im burnin gas like water! I was thinking about an air fuel controller, but i wanted to get that after my boost controller. I can tell its too rich cause the exhaust area gets dirty might easily... (black smoke on high revs)

Ok, Drama mode off now. What I said above is really true. A little too rich is better than any bit Lean. I personally feel an A/F meter is vital on a turbo car, especially one pushing the limits of stock components. Who konws, maybe your car really is running fine, and you just have a heavy foot
Good luck

RallyKeith, an A/F gauge/setup is not the first thing that is to be installed on a car. First of all it's cost prohibitive to have a wideband setup placed in car. And no a Greddy or Autometer narrowband A/F gauge does not count at adequate.
What you need first and for most are Boost and EGT gauges. From there you can see what boost levels your running and from EGT's you can see if your running rich or lean. Obvioulsy you can have more engine monitoring equipment like oil pressure, oil temp, fuel pressure, coolant temp, etc... But at least Boost and EGT are a must, everything else is icing on the cake...
As for running rich... The Subaru Impreza does run rich from the factory. It's a design built into the WRX so be safe and conservative. On a stock WRX, you can go to richer then 10:1 at WOT. Forced induction cars need to run rich for a reason. Last thing you want to do is knock to death.
For first mods, look into opening up your exhaust system with a catless uppipe and some sort of turboback or even TurboXS's Stealthback which retains the stock muffler for a 'stealth' look. Then when you get a boost controller, a boost gauge MUST be installed to correctly monitor boost levels. With these mods alone you should be in the mid 13 sec range on the 1/4 mile.
Then you can look into getting better tire, better brakes, a better suspension... The list goes on and on.

agreeing with what has already been said, try lightening up on the throttle, I know the turbo is addictive....but shoot, with gas at the price it is I personally cannot afford to boost much at all. Oh well, my fault for buying the car. It sounds like you enjoy the cars power and the last thing you want to do is cut back on the fuel that car relies on for the power. In short, lighten your foot until gas prices go down. You are using 91 octane right?

A motor that goes lean under boost can self destruct in a matter of moments.
