Read many cheap mods, but what actually works?

Okay, once I hit about 5K miles, I'll switch to synthetic, but what about the "grounding mod" that I can't get a definative answer for using the search? Brighter lights, smoother accel, and a more powerful crap stereo are cool even if it's not any more power. Being on a budget, I also read about gutting the stock up-pipe. Will this be a decent upgrade, or should I just buy the Helix? Another question relating to the previous: does that "wiggle" technique (to remove the up pipe out via the top) I read about over at NASIOC actually work? Even though I do have access to lifts, I would rather do that because it seems easier.
go with helix
ist larger in diameter, and well worth it
grounding mod is good and cheap, i went with it, though nothing hugely noticable
pullin it through the top takes longer, and im not sure how easier it is compared to doin a lift, but i think it just takes long
i did it this way, i did not lift my engine
hope this helps
while you're at it, get a turbo back

gutting an upipe is not a 30 minute job. i gutted my stocker after I installed a txs uppipe. it took 4 hours to get all of the cat out of it. If you are going to go that route, I would buy a used one for around 50 bux, then gut it so that you aren't pressed for time when you do the install.
The grounding mod won't give hp. I did it and the only thing I noticed is that my lights are definately brighter.
this is my first post here. yeah!
I've been over on nasioc for around 8 mos. I don't know why I haven't come here sooner, because there is all kinds of good info here.

Be careful with the 3/16 mod -- it's been a pain for some people that have done it. It's very subjective considering the wide variations in results.
Definitely go for the Helix upipe.
A mod that works very well is disabling the dorky daytime running lights, especially if you have aftermarket bulbs.

i like the day time running lights for 1 reason
if it is at night... and im doin somethign maybe a little illegal and a cop comes by..
turn off my headlights, i can still see the road, but by turning off the headlights, it turns the light off the license plate, for easier getaways

Every post I read about the 3/16 mod didn't sound all that stellar. Seemed like it was doing more harm then good.
If I have a lift, how much easier is it to remove the up pipe from below? I kinda wanted the cobb reflash when I save enough $$$. Maybe do the whole turbo back and get stage two. Then again, the Vishnu comes with an up pipe......
One things for sure tho, the stock tires gotta go. Maybe get the STi replica strut tower braces too. That's not too expensive, and I would probably see some good handling improvements

From the bottom, without the lift. Just grind off that heatshield bracket that's on the uppipe. You only have to cut off less than half of it, and it will slip out.
Gutting an uppipe will NOT take 4 hours with the proper tools. A big screw driver and hammer to get the big chunks out, then a drill and stiff wire brush to remove the tiny bits.

Replace the restrictive hose coupling betweem the wastegate T and the boost silinoid with a 3/16 coupling. The butt dyno didnt feel that much of a difference but the boost gauge showed that boost would build alittle earlier and last a little longer. Also get about 3 more lbs of boost in 2nd. You can find this mod at scooby mods. It costs around $1 so its worth a try. Im no expert but I wouldnt think it could cause any harm.
