Newbie question (how to run low-12 or high-11 seconds)

Still, that's a hot setup -- many people forget about upgrading the fuel system. Many people also forget about race-tuning their cams as well (which is fairly cheap) -- but that makes the car less streetable...

The best run I've seen an STI do at the track was a 13.3 and there was about 6 STI's racing. A stock WRX is about $24k, the STG4 is about 4k more.
STI's are pretty sweet though, If the STI would of been out at the begining of 2003 I would gotten one instead of the WRX. Now that my WRX is modified, I'll never trade it for an STI. I actually test drove one when I was thinking of trading in my WRX but decided it wasn't worth it.

Jeez...you gotta be smoking crack to be blind to the fact that the STi is gonna be eating stage 4 WRX's for lunch soon.

Is the only difference in the sti and wrx motor displacement? I figured that the wrx had a better built bottom end for power because it was designed for turbo applications. The sti is not, because it is the same motor as the forester, baja, imprexa, etc.

Key differences between WRX and STI:
STi has:
-superior transmission. Worth the difference in price for that alone.
-much better brakes
-much better wheels and tires
-better suspension
-larger motor
-larger turbo
-larger intercooler
-lots of other little things
The EJ257 in the STi is NOT the same as in NA Foresters, Imprezas, and Legacies. The block casting is similaras far as bolt patterns, and is stronger, but the crank, rods, pistons, heads, and basically everything else are different and are indeed intended for a turbo application. The STi bottom end is better than that of the USDM WRX.

it looked to me like we were talking about a stock wrx + stage 4 engine mods VS. a stock sti.
a MODDED sti vs. a MODDED wrx, well sure. of course, you've got to consider the level of mods too... there very well could be an engine swap to condend with.

So on this topic are we basically saying that the USDM Wrx is worth nothing then? Basically meaning if you don't get a STI modding the car isn't going to be worth it. I'm just wondering what everyone is thinking.

having said that, there is a lot to be said for doing it yourself. i enjoy working on my own car IMMENSELY and i cannot imaging doing it any other way. if i put the car through its paces, and i determine that i need more power, i can take action to achieve that goal. if i am smart about how i do it, i can do it rather cheaply in terms of parts, then invest some of my time to install it. it's not work because i love the process. if i feel i need brakes that can throw off more heat and faster, then i can upgrade that. until then, i will enjoy the fact i can use 16" wrx oem wheels, which are strong and light.

so if making things custom to your own liking excites you, having no warrantee doesn't scare you, and you like doing it yourself, then you're golden with a rex, a pocket full of cash that you saved, and some time to install your fun bits just might be the best thing for you!
