huh?

 

more liters = more displacement = potential for more HP/torque

ever hear that saying: "there is no replacement for displacement"

small displacement engines are not as readily capable of "high HP/torque" applications as bigger engines are, w/more displacement.

however, smaller engines with less displacement are capable of running at much higher RPMs than bigger engines are. So it really depends on your application.

but is being capable of running higher rpm's on smaller disp. cars necessarily better? because i am debating whether or not to trade in my rex for sti and i ma looking for every possiblity. I know Imprezers car runs at 9500 rpms i think on 2.4

 

Another thing about why racecars have a smaller displacement is because their racing circuit limits the size to try to keep it even between each car. I believe that WRC limits their competitors 2 liter engines.

If you used to be into domestics, think of liters as a different measure of cubic inches.
Also, WRC cars are only limited to 2 liters with forced induction. I believe the limit for non-forced induction is 3.5 liters. Also, WRC cars make about 300 - 350 hp or so; it's their anti-lag systems that make them so insanely fast (well, among other multi-million dollar bits of technology). Also, like WRXnffect said, longevity is of no issue to WRC teams.
Just for reference, some F-1 cars run 3 liter V12's! On the flipside, the Dodge Viper has an approximately 8 liter V-10

thats also the reason why you will rarely find a 4-banger in a hardcore rock crawler....because a 5.0-5.7 liter (302-350ci) v-8 will produce much more torque at 2500-3000 RPM than a 2 or 3 liter 4cyl. Granted you can make up for a certain amount of lost torque with your gearing, but put that same gearing with a v-8 and you will climb trees in a jeep!

like GOTBOOST said. the more cdi you have the more low end torque you will have because the crank is bigger. with the added length and weight of the crank the motor wants to keep rotating. the same as if you put a really light weight flywheel on your car you launch rmp would suffer but if you kept the stock crank your take off r's would be much lower
