I know this is not the answer you're looking for but the one thing you need to know is that an aftermarket intake cold air or short ram is a total waste of money unless you plan on running 300+ WHP.

The thing that is most important when choosing an intake is how the intake channels air passed the MAF. Some designs make the MAF think X amount of air is passing by when Y is actually passing and that can cause a lean A/F ratio and detonation.

If you have your mind set on installing an intake I'd suggest the SPT and a full enclosure. If you do it without a full enclosure your car will be sucking hot air when the car is not at speed and hot intake temps can also cause detonation.

The first thing I bought for my 02 was an intake. The WRX was my first turbo charged car and unfortunately I didn't do any research until I already installed the intake. That intake has been in the original box sitting on a shelf in the garage since 2002. BTW I never noticed an increase in power with the intake installed just noise.

Its a different story when you TUNE for the intake, otherwise it is pretty much useless without a tune.

Just do the silencer delete, and run a PVC elbow into the fender well, instant CAI for little monies...

True, but depending on the intake the cost of that tune could increase quite a bit. According to what I've read a lot of the intakes out there make it much harder to tune a car so IMO when it comes to power for the money it's still not worth it. I'm not an expert on the subject and the tuning thing is just something I've read but it makes sense to me.

you can tune for the intake, but why? unless, as stated before, your making 300+. just get the silencer delete. intake on these cars isnt really worth it, unless your going for looks. and i would never get a CAI for a turbo car, hydrolock.

and agian .. everyone is digressing from the question at hand..

but.. your sayin intake is pointless??.. soo header intake and exhaust is pointless???.. it should just be.. header and exhaust??..

yep.. i think everyone is thinkin too critical about high performance... i dont think.. INTAKE IS USELESS.. it cant be... it doesnt make any sense that puttin it in is USELESS.. and puttin it in.. i doubt im suspecting 50 extra horsepower.. then just like 1 or some kind of un noticeable increase... but anyway TO MY QUESTION..

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE.. between the intakes. how they function. and does it make your car slower. and over heat<<< please stay with that question before changing it to a different topic =) just need some answers. thankss

Why don't you take some time and do a search rather than depending on every one else. Did you look at the link that SUBY_6_STI posted.

Sorry I tried to help you understand some of the basics. Since you don't know the difference between the two I figured you probably didn't know anything about installing an intake on a WRX.

Come on man, this stuff isn't rocket science.

Alright, I guess I'll answer your question. A cold air intake is located in the fender and a short ram is located in the engine bay. All the other answers you are looking for have been answered already.
