Thanks, I've moved the thread to the proper forum.
Jumpman23, your Owners Manual contains this information also - look in the index under 'Capacities'.
When you find the time, it's not a bad idea to read the Manual from cover to cover. Yeah, some of the info is common sense but there are a few things in there that are good to know. For instance, sometimes folks unknowingly bump the switch on the top surface of the steering column and then can't figure out how to turn off the parking lights.

5.0 quarts is probably okay for the engine oil capacity but I put in the recommended 4.8 quarts for the WRX, myself. Use caution when exceeding recommended capacity for crankcase, transmission, or rear differential.
Too high an oil level can cause aeration of the oil as the fluid is whipped by rotating parts. You don't want aerated oil to be picked up by the oil pump because bubbles reduces the oil's film strength at bearing surfaces.
Too high a level can also cause premature oil seal failure, as they are made to operate with just a thin film of oil, not repeated contact with liquid.

...why does subaru say 4.2qts in the owners manual...i just changed mine and used 5, it's not over the full line, but 4.8 sounds like it would be perfect...so why do they say 4.2 in the manual? I don't get it...
Maybe you are looking at a different version, different engine, or (I don't think this makes a difference if memory serves) tranny type. . . But putting in 5 quarts will get a litte over full, nothing dangerous I do the same.

4.2 quarts is for non-turbo 2.5 liter engine.
4.8 quarts is for turbo 2.0 liter engine.
Look for 'Capacities' in Owner's Manual index in the back of the book.
