Recommendation for a place to drop old oil and empty oil bottles?
Anyone know where I can give my old used oil off?
Its illegal to drop this stuff down the drain,
so where does everyone drop off their oil in the bay area?
Im looking for a place in the east bay or the north bay
preferrably. Any recommendations would be great!
While Im at it, it okay to throw empty oil bottles (ex: Empty Mobile 1 bottles) in the trash? Or do we drop these bottles off at the same location where we drop the oil?
I mean technically these bottles have oil in it?

Kragen, Napa, Pepboys, Autozone.... etc...
Just call and ask if they recycle, and if so, is their tank full?
If not, bring your stuff, and dump it... but you can't leave containers. I think you can throw away empty oil containers... i do that, i'm not sure if that's ok or not... but i dump my oil at Kragen.

Too bad you didn't live in Santa Clara County. Our garbage pick up takes 1 gallon of used motor oil every week if we need.
And NO, you can not bring it to my house

Almost every city has a designated dumping facility. Some (not all) require a certain type receptacle in which you must bring your oil. Livermore, for example, has a container at the Fire Department on East Avenue, where you can just walk up, dump your spent oil & filters, and bail. Try calling the city and asking what they provide.

I dump my oil in plastic 1 gallon milk bottles, garbage truck takes them away (2+gal OK in Danville).
I dump my old oil filters at the San Ramon waste facility, and recycle the empty plastic oil containers.

The problem with mopst auto parts stores is that while they do take oil, they do not take filters. Find a county or city pick up, they usually take both used oil and filters.

You can also bring it to most oil changing places also. Many cities have a 'Household Hazardous Waste' program that you can bring things like oil to. I'm glad to hear that you don't dump it down the sewer or drain (very illegal!!). You really shouldn't throw away 'empty' oil containers' in the trash either.

If in alameda county, there is a hazmat recycling location for household waste.
I give most of my stuff to a friend in Palo Alto who will put it on his curb for me (they take filters too) but if I have an inordinately large amount of stuff, I'll drop it at the Alameda county drop off.

Wherever you live, if it's not in Alameda County, probably has a similar program. I just searched on the web for "hazardous household <county name>" and found it within the top three or so at google.
