High Idle on Startup?
I drive a 2002 WRX. Its about 40 degree's over here in the morning. When I start up the motor it idles at about 1.5k then after about 6-8 mintues of idling it goes down to 500. Whats a normal WRX suppose to idle at? and Is this normal for my car to idle this high when its cold? Thanks
Yup my 00 impreza RS does the same exact thing, I believe this is normal and its just your car warming up, but defintely worth a second opinion as I know very little about cars. Also, be care where you post your thread, as this thread will prolly be moved as it doesnt fall under the Tires and Wheels Forum ;-)

Absolutey normal.
Sage advice on warming up a car: I've got a 03 WRX Sedan now, but the previous car was a '90 Mitsu Eclipse Turbo which I bought new in '90. I made that four-banger pocket rocket last me almost 13 years and 260K miles. It was running good when I sold it, too. One of the things I did to keep it running so long was to always warm it up (every time) before moving.
On the WRX, I don't drive the car until the temp gauge hits at least the top part of the letter "C" (which indicates "COLD). (Man, I miss temp gauges with number degrees on them!) When the engine has reached this point, the temperature is rising quickly. It would be better to let the car warm up completely, but who has the time?
After that, I don't punch the turbo or run it hard (not over 3000 RPM) for another minute or so, waiting until the temp gauge hits about mid-scale, which is the normal running temp.
I also do a 20-30 second cool down, longer if the turbo was spooling just prior to parking.

Wrong section for this post, but, yest this is totally normal. I'm on my second Subaru, and both does the exact same thing. I always warm up my car. You don't have to, you can just not rev your engine past 3500 till it comes up to temp.

Pretty much every fuel injected car should idle at ~1500 rpm when cold, and slowly decrease as the coolant warms up. Normal warm idle is about 650 rpm.
