2003 WRX has high idle in heavy traffic
Hi All,
When driving in heavy stop and go traffic for more than a few minutes in my stock 2003 WRX (manual transmission and K&N air filter), the idle slowly increases over about 10 minutes until it reaches about 2000rpms. This seems to happen regardless of the tempature outside and when the engine is running at normal operating tempature. It stays high until I drive at regular cruising speed on the freeway or turn the car off and let it sit for about an hour.
I brought it to the dealer and told me they were able to duplicate the problem but the engine didn't throw a code so they didn't know the reason for the problem. They suggested I bring it in when it happens more frequently.
Have any of you experienced this problem? What is the solution? Thanks in advance!
Rob

Sometimes overoiling a K&N filter will eventually leave a fine oil residue on the MAF sensor. Look for the residue in the intake path after the filter element. I don't know if this would cause a fast idle speed at normal operating temperature, though. Usually when the oil residue affects the MAF, it results in slightly erratic air/fuel ratios that can be seen in a printout when using a wideband O² sensor.
