Fuel hiccup?

02 5MT WRX 49K

I purchased the car this summer and now it is winter in the mountains. I am noticing the gas smell, that seems so common in the 02's, I am working on scaring up the time to travel to the dealer, my local mechanic said not to worry about it because all Subarus run rich when the start cold and that is the cause... but we will see what the dealer says.

Anyway my real concern now, is that yesterday while travelling uphill at 75% throttle going about 70 in 4th; there was a violent momentary hesitation, followed by the check engine light. The light stayed on for a couple of starts and stops for half of the day and then turned off and the car ran fine. Then tonight cruising at 60 in 5th another stutter, but less violent and no check engine light.

Q's: Could this be related to the fuel smell? Could it be caused by a bad tank of gas? I have looked around and can't track down any similar situations.

Do you smell any fuel in the engine compartment, or is it limited to the exhaust? There was a TSB about a fuel leak issued by Subaru a while back. It only affected early models.

"Starting rich when cold" is true but you should not have raw fuel in the engine compartment under any circumstances. If there is a fuel leak, Subaru will likely still fix it because it's a safety hazard.

I don't believe the rough running engine is related to the fuel leak I mentioned above.
