Engine/Power - EJ20T (pre-2006 WRX and JDM) There is replacement for displacement, it is forced induction - OEM 2.0 liter turbo engines in the USDM WRX. 90-94 Legacy Turbo EJ22 turbo engines can also be discussed here.

hesitation starting out

hey. i had an 02 and now an 03 wrx. on both i noticed that, if i start out and shift up into 2nd gear such that the revs drop down to about 1500rpm, then hold the pedal in to accelerate, i get some hesitation. like a slight pulling up to say 3,000rpm.

anyone else notice this?

i just turned 1000miles on it and had the oil change. with the 02, i noticed it the entire time i had it. the 02 also had clutch shudder problem.

Normal. It's a small displacement turbo motor with low compression. This means that before the onset of turbo boost, there is lag. The turbocharger has a range of efficiency and you are asking it to perform outside of that range. Solution - shift at a higher rpm - rev higher!

it's one of those things...

that i hear about, read about and never experienced. the first time i thought it was like the clutch slipping or, the computer needing to be reset (mixture issues or gas issues or something)... then when i experienced on the new 03, i figured i should ask and that it was pretty normal.

so here it is : "well i'll be darned! that's what that is. hm, that's something". hahaha

thanks

Yeah, I drove a WRX (my friend's) for an extended period of time, and for the first time, a couple of days ago. I own a 98 RS, and one cannot drive the WRX like an RS, or else that lag and low compression will make you come within an inch of stalling and at times make the drivetrain buckle menacingly...but I still want to put a WRX engine in my Impreza. The lag just means you have to adjust your driving technique.

all you gotta do is shift higher so it drops you at at least 3500rpm and you'll have gobs of power on hand.

I bought a 00 RS in Oct. of 00, drove it till last month when I got my rex. I completely know what your talkin about, as everyone else has said, its normal... shift later.

I still love to drive the RS though, NA feeks much more... excited... than the turbo, but still would never go back. You'll get used to it
