Engine/Power - EJ20T (pre-2006 WRX and JDM) There is replacement for displacement, it is forced induction - OEM 2.0 liter turbo engines in the USDM WRX. 90-94 Legacy Turbo EJ22 turbo engines can also be discussed here.

this is a difficult question to answer. what are your goals with the car?

id like to have decent power and have it look and sounds good too... i was told that a wrx engine would drop in and i could keep my auto trany...but i wouldn't mind switching it to a manual if i had to... i just want a car that i can be proud of and be able to actually compete if someone wants to race me. im only 17 so i dont have much cash...but i can get enough to buy a used engine for 3500 which is what i have seen most ej's for

Not to go off topic here, but I wouldn't talk about "street racing". You're sure to get flamed, and it's also against the forum rules. And coming from experience as a young WRX owner, you don't want to get that on your record or you'll be paying a very high insurance rate (I'm paying over $300/month for just 2 points..)

But, you don't really need to do a swap, there are plenty of upgrades you can do for a little bit of power for starters. I'd start with a catback exhaust system, go catless if you want to be really loud but I believe you'll lose a little torque. You can then go with a larger TMIC, maybe get a lighter pulley, Engine Management would be good, you could also get a larger turbo.

Just be smart when your on the road, it doesn't make sense spending a bunch of money into a car if you might wreck it, or get it impounded by the po-po

Why not trade in or sell your Legacy for a 02+ Subaru STi or WRX?
Just a subjestion.

I have a 510 that I was planning on doing this with...however, after extensive measuring, I have determined that the EJ motors are simply too wide for the engine bay. It will not fit between the shock towers on a 510. I had thought about going the whole tube frame route in order to "make" it fit, but alas, that is waaaaaaaay too expensive and would require an entirely new front suspension/steering design. I do have an alternate idea though that will be just as awesome, and will probably work much better....it's top secret though.
