fluctuate rpm when idle

I just got my 04 WRX wagon few days ago, I really enjoy it. However, I found the engine will jumping from 500/600 rpm to 1k rpm when I put it in Neutral at traffic light, and like 5 sec. later I drop back to 500/600 rpm. I wonder if it is normal for 2.0 Turbo engine? Or is this kind of symptom only happen on break in period? Should I need to worried about this.

hmm mine never did this..give a call to your subie dealership and ask..or take it in for a check..mine never bounced around..is the engine cold when this happens?

When it is cold, it idle at around 1k... after driving for a while it will idle at 500/600 rpm, and then it will jump around after I put it in neutral for more than 30 sec.

do u have ac/fan on? with those on, the engine seems to idle at higher rates at times

I don't have AC on, but I did have the fan on. It only flutuate once a while. Also I did notice the rpm drop slower than my other car... is it because of the turbo? I mean the rpm didn't drop in linear... it drop so slow at around 1.1k to 600 rpm.

Just take it back to the dealer and have them look at it. The car is new so there should be no problem with having work done if any needs to be done.

I had it happen to my civic before. The rpms would fluctuate and the car would buckle lightly, suffice to say, it scared the crap out of me.

Thanks for all inputs.. Anyway I will take it back to check and hopfully I can duplicate the problem at the dealer.

One thing I have notice today is, when I turn on the fan (1) the engine blip like that. Otherwise, when I turn the fan off (0), it just idle normally.

so was the fan the reason to why it idled differntly? or is it still happening?

I am not sure, but I notice the fan make difference to the engine idling rpm.

so is that the same difference as to what u were experiencing before in the first post? if not, post further details and that way we'll have a better idea

Yes it is the same, but I discovered it related to the fan speed.

I just stop by dealer this afternoon. What I discovered is, I turn the vent to deforse. And the sevice advisor told me that the compressor will automatically turned on when I put it in deforse. They told me it is normal for AC compressor to give a blip to the engine. So after I turn it out to of the deforse, it get back to normal... Sorry guys, I should study the manual first.
