My car used to idle at 750 but since the install of my catback it idles around 500. Seems ok to me.

If you mean a WRX sedan, they idle at 1500 RPM when the engine is cold, and at 500 when it is warmed up. You may also idle higher at higher altitudes...

What is the reason for the higher idle when it is cold? Just to warm the engine faster?

Yes, the engine idle's at a higher rpm to help warm it up faster. It also seems logical that because oil is so much more viscous at lower temps that the engine needs to spin faster to keep running until the oil warms (although I don't know how much stock to put in that theory). As far as I know pretty much all cars have this fast idle feature when cold. Atleast any car new enough to have a computer. All of my parents cars (Chevy Silverado, 2 Saturns, Mercury minivan) that I drove in high school fast idled in the cold.

I think this has been covered, make sure you're not reading the lines wrong. I think they idle at 750.

My WRX liked to idle a touch higher... So I raised it to idle at 1000 RPMS.

I think the "rough" idle of my 02 WRX is "cute" for some reason -- it just gives me a grin every time. It reminds me so much of the Porsche 912 my dad restored while I was in high school...

I noticed when I first added my turbo-back that my idle droped approx 250rpm. Then I put the stock back on and it ran at 750 again. So I think it could have somthing to do with back pressure.
Anyone else have a similar experiance?
Not that I mind having a low idle, just curious.

Yep used to idle at 750 with stock, with new catback the idel dropped to 500 rpm. For a little while after I got the exhaust put on, at idle it used to occasionaly jump up to from 500 to ~800 rpm. I suppose the ecu was still trying to adapt to the new exhaust I guess.

think of it as a type of an automatic choke for cold starts. Same basic idea.
