Engine ticking when worm.
Ok i noticed somthing kinda odd today. I know that some engine ticking is normal on suby boxer engines, but today i noticed it dosnt tick on cold start-up. I find this odd because thats when my other car used to tick the most. It starts ticking normally after the car is fully wormed up and dosnt go away. Any ideas?

I'm guessing by your name that you are an X 4G63 Driver like myself. That engine basically has the same hydraulic lifters that the WRX has. The 4G63 would tick on a could startup because the oil was cold and thick and woul sludge up inside the lifters. I dont know why the WRX would be any diferent. Sounds like it may be more of a problem. Now I'm curious why it would do that too.

Yah, some engines do tick when you first start them up. Especially the older cars. That is why they made something called top oil. On your car, could be a bunch of things. One thing you could try and do is take a little pipe and move it to different areas of the engine while it is running and put your ear up to the other end. This can give you an idea of specifically where it is coming from. It is easier to diagnose this way. Lot of things make a 'ticking' sound. Lifters, valves, exhaust leaks for example. I really hate sounds that a car makes...drives you crazy.

WRX EJ20 turbo engine has solid lifters and periodic lash adjustment is performed using shims of varying thickness.
As for the ticking sound, my rex ticks when warm. On some cars, it's more noticeable than others. Maybe my car's valve lash is out of spec...

EJ20 use manual-followers, and like WW said they require a shim to adjust lash. The procedure actually looks fairly straightforward, provided you have the tool to compress the valve springs so the shim can be slid out.
You can download the info from Subaru for about $20.00.

B T W: my WRX makes a little tick too, always has. I am going to check valve lash @ 60K.

I always thought that they were hydrulic as well.
Im glad i found that out now.
Hom much do the shims cost from Subaru? And what are the various thickness' offered?
I like this idea. Always like manualy adjustable valve clearance. Dont like leaving it up to lifters (Old prelude had 2 bad lifters and costed me SOOO much $$$)
