EGT readings

hey all, i had an unerving experience last night in the snow. For those of you here in the Pacific Northwest, you know what's up here... Down on the valley floor we got pelted with snow and ice in the "Winter Storm..." haha anyways, i was out messin round in a parking lot cuttin cookies. I have a greddy egt guage that has a warning light that is set to come on at 840 degrees celcius. I can't say that i actually watched it the whole time, but i'm pretty sure it never came on. Besides i was only in first and second gear, and when you're spinnin out you never build much boost anyways (no load right...)

well here's my problem: on the way home i stopped at the grocery and noticed that the needle was kind of twitchy, when i hit the peak recall button, it jumped way up to like 1100 degrees celcius. I've done long pulls in the upper gears with the boost flowin and never gone past 840 before. Do you think there's a way that the snow affected the reading by connecting the contacts somehow? I drove the car to work today and it seems fine, if it really ran that hot, wouldn't there be some noticeable damage? thanks for the help. Benji

You may have a bad ground that is causing the gauge to be a little twitchy thus the crazy peak reading.

You would know if you ran the car at 1100C

1100C would have left you with molten puddle somewhere.
Like Mike said...bad/wet ground or wiring.

TIP: DO NOT hold full lock on the steering wheel while "cuttin cookies", "doing donoughts" or whatever...you may(will) burn out your power steering pump if you do...

thanks

yah, thats what i thought prolly happened, there was about six inches of snow (my car is pretty low too) and i wasn't the first one out in the parking lot, so it was pretty deep. its very probable that there was lots of snow up in my engine compartment and then it melted down across the leads to the sensor. And other than that one time i noticed the guage twitching it does fine, so it seems logical that it was grounding or shorting out. and thanks for the info about the PS pump, I dont think i ever made it to full lock, but it was turned a little bit some of the time.

That reminds me of another question:

What happens to the drivetrain in Subaru's AWD when you use the parking brake to initiate a slide? Does it lock up the driveline? The tranny? all four axles and wheels? or is there some sort of one way slip that lets the rears lock up on their own?

laters, Benji

Don't use the handbrake like that....your center differential will last a whole lot longer if you don't

right'o

thanx, i actually haven't done that in my rex, just in the front-drives i've had before it. I'm kinda mechanically inclined, and i was just thinking through what all would be affected when i used the e-brake to slide it. i even read a review of the STi where they stated that it was equally easy to initiate powerslides with the throttle or the parking brake... guess i won't put too much stock in what else that editor has to say about the technical things anyways. thanks for the info though. i have a greddy egt gauge, and after i work on my car and drive, i notice it fluctuates a little sometimes, i just unplug the plug behind the gauge and plug it back it and it goes back to normal.

the sti is a different story. it's perfectly safe to do it in that car, since the moment the parking brake leaves its stop the DCCD switches to "open."

yet another reason to be jealous.

NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

i already can't want one any more than i already do... does that makes sense? a buddy at work was surprised to hear me say that if i could get any other car it would be another Subaru (the STi of course) most people don't understand, or even care for that matter, about the little details that make the Technica what it is. like a DCCD or spray for the I/C i want one bad, just have to wait though. i'm curious to see if they come down in price a bit when there's other performance subies in the lineup (turbo Legacy, then turbo forester...) and if an RA or somethin cool like that comes over maybe some of us will find better deals on the STi's... later, Benji
