DIY Spark Plugs: Don't believe the hype

I was hesitant to do it myself because the dealer charges something like $149 and everyone whines about how hard it is.

First time out was very easy, about an hour working alone.

Tools needed to make it very easy:
  • 10mm for air scoop
  • 12mm for washer reservoir, airbox, and coil bolt
  • 5/8" Spark plug socket
  • 3" extension (for actual plug removal)
  • >12" of extension (for airbox removal)
  • 1/4" socket wrench/torque wrench
  • antiseize
  • beer/soda

Don't be scared of what you read...it's _really_ easy.

Now to go see how long BKR7E coppers last.

First time I did plugs, I timed it, took 50 minutes.
I can do 'em now in ~30, not rushing.
Piece of cake, just like the 'green brackets', and the oil return hose for the turbo.

Almost 30k even. I will post pics of the stockers later so people can tell me how many things are wrong with my setup!

The biggest PITA is making sure the coilpacks are properly seated on the plug. Another thing to make sure is that you have a ratchet that has a small degree of travel between clicks of the ratchet. The driver-side rear plug doesn't leave a lot of room for ratcheting.

I had that problem too...I just broke it loose with the ratchet then unscrewed it by hand.

coppers? i know my came with NGK platnums stock and i put one step colder NGKs back in like $11 a peice for the plugs. and they were real easy to change me and a buddy in like 1 hour this included changing IC hoses and airboxes.
Everything I've read states that copper sparks much better than the rare metals, but they don't last as long. Something like <10k miles instead of ~50k++

An offset rachet handle, one with a bend in it, works well in this area.
