ive driven the car like that to pick up something and that sucker is loud. i think i disconnected it after the midpipe. my entire interior started to rattle. but the spool time is almost instant. sounded great too.
maybe just get some heavy duty exhaust hangers, and somehow make something that will hold the disconnected parts?

You mean take the bolts out and just like shoot from the downpipe but have no midpipe but leave the muffler hanging so it looks legal? Meh, its possible, its called some steel wire.. I shot out of the downpipe for months before i got my exhaust system. I couldn't stand the quiet-ness of the subaru. I went from a 1971 karmann ghia with abarth exhaust to a quiet as hell subaru.. noooo freakin way.. first day i had the thing i took off the exhaust cept for the downpipe and drove it like that for months.. everyone kept telling me thats a great way to destroy your tranny.. ah well. **** happens..

I've heard of this
The Honda drag racing crowd utilizes this method of quick cheap track day exhaust. I have heard of a removable 12 inch section between the cat flange and the first hanger. It would seem to involve a muffler shop cutting your mid pipe and welding flanges onto your piece of pipe so as to create a removeable section.I would suggest NOT using locking type nuts on the bolts as are stock and go with regularly threaded nuts (logical I know).I could see your quest for stealthyness and if done correctly there would be no risk of loosing your exhaust as long as the hangers are in good order and you do not eliminate any of them.
I have also heard of this. . . .Just like above where you have about a 12 inch gap and then you have another pipe that has a flange with a mandrel bend straight to the ground. . . . .I would guess so it doesnt burn anything.

WRXWagon203.... that is Exactly what i am trying to do is make it look legal by keeping exhaust on the car. Ive been driving with it disconnected for a couple days and smile each time it rumbles... but frown when i think about it just dangling thier...i just hope my hangers will hold up until i can get my exhaust...instead of the metal wire idea(which i am considering) is thier any others out thier to keep it from dangling like a bell...

Basicaly your exhaust just dangles any way even when hooked up , those bolts are supposed to allow movement , expansion and contraction , but I would be more concerned with the clancking of the flanges driving me nuts.
I see the benefits of doing this for a track day where the car is always in motion but I would caution you from a safety standpoint to do this because I would not want to see you stuck in traffic and pass out from all that co2 seeping up into the car.It may just be better to invest in one of the stealthy exhausts out there if you don't want a straight through cabbage cannon like I have!

Try to avoid having the exhaust exit underneath the passenger compartment. Even though our engines run cleaner than a '60s car or truck, the fumes over time are still toxic. They will find their way through vents and cracked windows when the car is idling.
It still won't gain as much power as a good 3" turbo back system with or without tuning because the cats and the pipe diameter still restrict the flow, not just the resonator and muffler.

jaypowell78: on extended trips.. the exhaust is pretty much being vented right onto the transmission if you are running open dp.. hence heat on the tranny.. who knows but a local reputable porsche tuner gave me an earful about it during a summer meet.
