Engine/Power - EJ20T (pre-2006 WRX and JDM) There is replacement for displacement, it is forced induction - OEM 2.0 liter turbo engines in the USDM WRX. 90-94 Legacy Turbo EJ22 turbo engines can also be discussed here.

Dont clear the codes.. find out what are the codes.. that might help you solve the problem..!

HAHA, snap, I should've thought of that.

I'll log the codes later in the afternoon and I'll post them up. Thanks, lol

So I was going ot mention this when I watched your videos in a previous thread but decided to keep it to myself. I will now share what was on my mind.

The amout of white smoke you were getting upon startup was excessive. I am not a mechanic but my first impression and best case scenario would be a cracked head gasket.

It could be much worse. Based on the smoke you were getting did you do a compression test before your tune on a new turbo?

I would hate to have seen you spending all that money on parts when you really should have been doing an R&R on your motor.........

P.S. I know your friend works there so dont take this as me bashing him please, but LIVERMORE SUBARU SUCKS DONKEY BALLZ......... For example. I had 12 bent valves that came into contact with my pistons. This left deep gouges in my pistons. The rocket scientists at LIVERMORE SUBARU attempted to just drop in new valves and use a grinder and valve lapping compund to make them fit......dont take your car there....EVER!!!!!

No, we never did any system tests before the tune. I just brought it to EQ, they installed an MBC, did a quick inspection test, strapped it on the dyno, and ED started tuning.

I wasn't TOO worried about the black/white smoke that came out of the exhaust when I first installed my parts because I had alot of bolt on parts installed right away with no tune, so I knew **** was going to happen. The excessive white smoke didnt worry me too much because I knew white smoke had to do with water or something, I can't quite remember.

I usually always request my friend as the mechanic who does work on my car whenever I bring it in to Subaru, I only trust him to do work on it, but this time for some reason I didn't request him, so it was someone else.

My appt with EQ is set for tomorrow at 1030, so we'll be doing a pressure system test to see whatsup. Hopefully I won't have to get a new retune and hopefully just some minor tuning, IDK how that's going to work though. I'll see what they suggest tomorrow.

Originally I was tuned for 1300cc injectors but then I bought new 850cc injectors and I wanted to switch them out. I thought 850s would help rather than having such large 1300cc, but the guys over at EQ told me that they've seen 1300cc injectors work fine on a 2.0L 16G turbo, so IDK. Maybe I'll switch out to my 850s tomorrow and put the 1300cc up for sale?

How many miles on this motor?
What's the rate of oil consumption?

Somethings aren't adding up.

The motor has approximately 51,XXX miles thus far. Rate of oil consumption is normal I guess. Not going through it or anything. I'm over at EQ now and they're doing a couple system tests; exhaust, boost, now theyre doing the injectors and coolant. So hopefully it's nothing major and it'll be relatively simple to fix. They said that it could either be a broken injector seal or cut in one of the hoses or a blown head gasket *crossing my fingers it's not*

Also found a shot gasket from exhaust to axleback...that thing was like burnt BBQ, lol.

Somethings fishy...this car is costing me way too much money. I want to be done with it...

Ed smoothed out the car for me. It's running alot better and safer than it was before. Car is still a beast!

HA.

They pulled a couple CELs, #P0301 & P0304 and swapped the coilpacks. I believe cylinder #1 or cylinder #4 kept misfiring

Exhaust pressure test showed leaks at the header slip joint (the guys said that is normal as with all header slipjoints i believe) and some small leaks at the header sensor plug. As I mentioned before, the exhaust to axleback gasket was shot.

The coolant pressure test showed a loss of 0.2psi over 15minutes, so that was ruled out. very minimal.

Intake manifold test showed no leaks.

Spark plugs were like BBQ...I was shocked when ED showed me them...

Compression & Leakdown test showed:
cylinder #1 showed 7% change at 147psi
cylinder #2 showed 5% change at 145psi
cylinder #3 showed 5% change at 148psi
cylinder #4 showed 5% change at 144psi

The only thing left for me to do is to get to a smog station and have them do a hydrocarbon test in my coolant to determine if i have a blown headgasket or not. *crosses finger and hopes I dont*

Did you have the plugs replaced?
What was the coolant temp delta during that time; pressure varies with temperature.

Yup, they replaced my BBQd plugs with one step colders. I had a pack at home so I just sent them to EQ because they used a pack of theirs. Never replaced them before. Don't know about the 2 owners before me, but I doubt it.

Not sure about the coolant temp. I just went around two 2 different smog places and asked if they would do a hydrocarbon test. They laughed and told me to get lost. One said he wasn't going to risk using his machine and flat out said that I had a blown head gasket and the other just ignored me......w/e...

The main problem seemed to be the plugs as they were completely fouled out. This makes sense after realizing that the car was originally driven over to us on 1300cc injectors with no tune or base map for them. I'm still amazed the car made it all the way! After replacing the plugs and fixing a few leaks, the car was running much better overall I made a few pulls and cleaned up the a/f to correct for the leaks at no charge.

The only major concern now is the coolant consumption which this car has experienced since before the turbo swap. We recommended documenting the level of consumption over the cours of a month and possibly checking for hydrocarbons at the reserviour to confirm a bad head gasket.

Thanks

Even with the OTS limp map from COBB that I got online, it was still running like p00p. It died on me a couple times, but that's only when I stepped on the clutch and let it idle in neutral; so everytime I would come to a stop, I kicked it into neutral and kept it revving a bit.

Yeah, I realized after I got home that you did some road pulls for me and I was going crazy because I didn't see it on the invoice or anything. But thanks for looking out Ed, I appreciate it... I sent out the spark plugs yesterday, so hopefully you guys will receive them tomorrow, and if not tomorrow then monday for sure. Let me know if you guys end up not receiving them.

I went to a smog station and the guy basically told me to get lost because he wouldn't "risk using his machine" on my car. What a jerk...
So for the rest of this month, I'll be looking at my coolant reserve at the end of every day and keeping notes like you guys suggested.

THANKS! SEE YOU GUYS NEXT WEEK AT EQ'S DYNO DAY!!!!
