Normal Engine behavior?

I just bought and '03 WRX. The engine seems to chug a little, below boost. I that normal? Is that what the reviews mean when they say the car has no ***** without the boost?

When the turbo does kick in....something it feels like the engine makes a "thud" like sound and of course the car takes off like a rocket.

Is this all normal?

My stock-powered '03 WRX doesn't do either of those things. Pedal to the floor acceleration under 3K RPM is average to slow for a normally aspirated 2 liter 4-banger, but doesn't "chug" unless the car is hopelessly lugged down, like running 30 MPH in fifth gear. When the turbo begins to spool up I hear the turbo whine come up and feel the power, thud-free.

Chugging when accelerating

my 03 WRX chugs when accelerating. It is really noticeable when i am in 5th gear on the highway and the RPMs are at about 2800. I step on it, I feel the turbo kick in, and the chugging happens.

Any ideas?

Thanks

That's called 'lugging', not 'chugging' the engine. 5th gear at speed puts much greater load on the engine and that RPM is too low for real acceleration. I don't know the reason but lugging the engine is supposedly hard on engine bearings.
